Those One Armed Bandits – Slot Machines
Once developed as a means to distract the casual gamblers from the more serious table games in casinos, slot machines have come a long way. Now in America, they actually contribute to almost sixty percent of the total gambling profits made by casinos. Modern day slot machines are computer operated, although the game remains the same. The player sits facing the machine and pulls a lever on its side which makes three pictures inside the machine align themselves next to each other. If all the three pictures are the same, the player wins. If not, hard luck mate. However some modern day machines do give away smaller winning payouts if the machine shows a particular type of picture.
How it differs from other casino games is that, out of all the popular games, this is probably the only one where chance plays the biggest hand. A person who has played all day on a machine and won nothing should not be surprised if the old lady who uses the machine after him wins a jackpot (all three pictures being similar) within the next couple of moves. He may be sad, or angry, he should not be surprised – it’s just the way this machine is. (more…)
