Poker – King Gambling Games

The King of All Gambling Games – Poker

Poker is actually not one kind of game but a family of card games that share betting rules and usually, but not always, hand rankings. In most of these games, the round begins with one forced bet and then the game moves on to the player on the left. Each subsequent player must now match the maximum previous bet or fold, thus forsaking his bet. A player who matches a bet can also decide to increase the amount of the bet. The betting round ends with every player having either matched the last bet or having folded. The last man sitting wins the game.

Since there are lots of different types of poker, I shall mainly discuss the basic tips to keep in mind to maximize one’s chances of success. The first important thing to note is that playing every hand does not mean that you are winning more, but more often than not, it means the exact opposite. So it is advisable to fold if one is not sure of what to do next, while the bets are still low. Second, look at the good poker players – they are never drunk. Do not play drunk, to make sure that you do not give in to emotions and place unnecessary bets.

Bluffing is an important part of poker, where a player continues to play a hand inspite of having been dealt weak cards just for the sole purpose of intimidating the opponents into folding. But remember, not to bluff without reason and more importantly not to be predictable. Watch any poker movie, like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and you will know what i mean.  One other skill to master would be the ability to watch the other players on the table even when you’re not in that particular hand. Player A’s eye movement when he bluffs, player B’s sudden eye movement reacting to weak cards, player’s C’s change in posture due to sudden rise in confidence having received excellent cards – these are a few examples of what I mean.

And a very basic tip would be to not get carried away by previous successes or failures and carrying forward that emotion in the next hand. Every hand is a new hand. As Kenny Rogers rightly sang in Gambler – “you got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em..”
