Slot Machines – Armed Bandits

Those One Armed Bandits – Slot Machines

Once developed as a means to distract the casual gamblers from the more serious table games in casinos, slot machines have come a long way. Now in America, they actually contribute to almost sixty percent of the total gambling profits made by casinos. Modern day slot machines are computer operated, although the game remains the same. The player sits facing the machine and pulls a lever on its side which makes three pictures inside the machine align themselves next to each other. If all the three pictures are the same, the player wins. If not, hard luck mate. However some modern day machines do give away smaller winning payouts if the machine shows a particular type of picture.

How it differs from other casino games is that, out of all the popular games, this is probably the only one where chance plays the biggest hand. A person who has played all day on a machine and won nothing should not be surprised if the old lady who uses the machine after him wins a jackpot (all three pictures being similar) within the next couple of moves. He may be sad, or angry, he should not be surprised – it’s just the way this machine is.

Most games vary with the winning combination of symbols, which is traditionally posted on the face of the machine. The modern machines also provide this on a separate screen accessible by the push of a button. Since the slot machines generally make away with more money than they give out, and they have a lever on the side, they have termed as “one armed bandits”.

One interesting trivia about slot machines involving popular culture, is that the sound the pulling of the lever makes has been traditionally used with the concept of money in man’s life. A very good example would be Pink Floyd’s “money” from the album Dark Side Of The Moon,  where the song starts with the sound of slot machine levers being pulled all around. Not meant for serious gamblers, this small but highly lucrative invention has proved to a boon for the gambling as well as tourism industry. So a notice to all travellers out there – even if you do not go to Vegas in your life, make sure you have at least spent some time on a slot machine, just for the sake of telling your grand children, “yes kids, I have gambled in life.”
